Gray Hair Don't Care by Karen Booth

Everything went wrong. And then she went gray.

At 47, newly divorced makeup artist Lela Bennett is dreading her next steps. Dating. Meeting people. Not letting herself go. But then she runs into Donovan James and tries something different—sleeping with her sexy crush from college. Unfortunately, in a post-orgasm stupor, Lela confesses she was in love with Donovan all those years ago. He responds by leaving while she sleeps. The next morning, her gray hairs are practically taunting her. She knows she has to get it together. Forget men. Embrace her age. Own her gray.

Donovan James is a marketing genius, but his ex-wives will tell you—nothing freaks him out like feelings. Three years after his one-night stand with Lela, he’s focused on his daughter’s lifestyle company, but unprepared to meet the face of their new beauty brand. It’s Lela. With stunning silver locks and new confidence, she’s no longer swayed by his charms. When business starts booming, the universe seems intent on throwing them together time and again. And suddenly, two people convinced that romance was behind them are wondering if love could be what’s next.

Book Review

A cute, fast read about how love can find and bind a couple at any age.

Lela is fifty and the stories starts out three years beforehand, when she runs into a past flame, Donovan. They reconnect after twenty-five years for a night before he hits the road. She’s crushed because this is the second time he’s played this hand. Lela decides enough is enough and she's done living life on other people’s terms. She stops dying her hair and pursues the idea of a cosmetic line Lela B.

Life catapults forward into the future three years. Lela’s career as a makeup artist is doing great, better than great, her makeup line is about to become a huge success. We find Donovan with his daughter Echo, attempting to reestablish himself in her life since he wasn’t that vested when she was a kid. Her company Echo Echo is in need of marketing consultation, which Donovan provides. He steps into the role of a father to a grown-up.

The dynamics are set. We sense where this is going. Until Echo and Lela come up with the idea of a business venture together, which puts Donovan as the odd man out. He hustles to prove to Lela (and his daughter) that he isn’t the proverbial jerk who hits the road when things get edgy. He steps it up to help them out when it comes to taking Lela B to the next level.

Through it all: Lela's business venture, Echo’s marriage, a mint Vespa, anxiety and stress, food and family dynamics, an ex-wife and a competitive brother, heartfelt admissions and acknowledged regrets, Lela and Donovan find their way back to the place where they started: friends to lovers and finally, being in love.

Gray Hair Don’t Care is a love conquers all romance with oodles of 80s vibes and new wave musical references.

5 out of 5 Stars!
